Vibro-Tactile Displays on the Wrist

BuzzWear is a wrist-worn wearable tactile display (WTD) that is designed to provide easy to perceive alerts to on-the-go users. The distraction-free capability of BuzzWear is tested with two experiments.

The first experiment with 2304 trials of data from 12 participants, which focuses on the perception sensitivity of tactile patterns, reveals that people discriminate 24 tactile patterns with 99% of accuracy after 40 minutes of training. Among four parameters (intensity, starting point, temporal pattern, direction) that were configured to design 24 patterns, intensity was the most difficult parameter to distinguish and temporal pattern was the easiest.

The second experiment with 9900 trials of data from 15 participants, which focuses on the dual task performance, explores users’ ability to perceive incoming alerts from two mobile devices (WTD and mobile phone) with and without visual distraction. The second experiment reveals that when interrupted by visual distraction, reaction time to perceive incoming alerts becomes slower in the mobile phone alert but not in the WTD.
